How to Write a Blog Post

I talk to hundreds of Pastors every week and one thing that keeps coming up in our conversations  is that, apparently, most Pastor’s do not have a clue how to write a blog post and get people interested in reading the posts after it is written.

These tips I am giving are not necessarily original, and I do not claim to be an expert on blogging, but here we go:

  1. Write a Great Title for Your Post - The title needs to be catchy and interesting otherwise who is going to read the content of the post. The title of your blog post becomes the title of your page (used in the Title Tag) so it’s important in Search Engine Optimization. Make sure your post title is compelling.
  2. Images - While it isn’t essential to use an image in your blog post, it does make the page look a bit more attractive and colorful – and images can be used to break up text, so that it doesn’t appear so long and drawn out. In addition, images can actually illustrate points. You can upload your own  images, look for free or inexpensive stock photos online, or use well-known sites like Flickr.
  3. Writing Your Content - It may seem a bit strange, but the last thing you do is write your content. List your main points and then expound with just a paragraph or two. I know pastors like to make their point and are good at it, sometimes at great length.  But in this case, less is more.  Be to the point and don’t feel that you have to give a full explanation of every point. Keeping it short will help keep the curiosity level up and may even stir the reader to do some research on their own.  And here I am getting a bit long.
  4. Include a Call to Action - The President of our company insists that when we make any kind of presentation or write an article or blog that we must have a call to action. And he is right. Yes, I do mean, tell your reader what to do next and why it will benefit them.  To stir to action is what brings a person to a decision and that is why, for example, back in the olden days we gave an invitation to accept Jesus Christ at the end of every sermon preached. The call to action here is, follow these few short steps in writing your blog post and watch your readership increase.
  5. PS - For interest’s sake, add a PS. This can be a place to reemphasize the main point of the blog and restate the call to action. Most good letters and emails have a PS, so why not the blog post?

Well there you have it.  A few tips on how to write a blog post.  Good writing!! And may your readership increase.

Why We Read Blogs

Why has blogging become such a great hit? I was raised to think that your opinions were always kept to yourself. Now, we all blog and are constantly looking for what other people blog about.  The thing I like the most is that there is a blog for every kind of person.

Here at faithHighway, I read blogs from different churches to see what their opinions are on different things. Blogs let the reader have a personal relationship the writer; they develop a connection and common ground when it comes to the subject they are reading about.

Some of my favorite blogs:

  • RayJortiz.com – When I first started reading Ray’s blog, I saw someone that could be honest with the topics he was blogging about, including: some of the struggles that not only he faces but that everyone does when walking with Christ, how planting a church can have its ups and downs, and the benefit of being able to spread God’s word.
  • Celebration Church- I have been going to Celebration for years now. They actually started a church in Xai-Xai, Mozambique about 2 years ago. I love reading about the way God is moving in people’s lives over there. I enjoy being able to make that connection with someone on the other side of the world and feel like I’ve contributed to starting something that has saved hundreds of peoples lives.  The blog allows me to get updates on new additions and progress of the church.

Blogs can inspire, inform, and entertain us. What are some of your favorite blogs? And how do they encourage you in reaching more people with technology?

Do you have a blog? Have you ever thought of having one? Now is as good a time as any to get going.

Church Crunch posted an update about the WordPress 3.0 push.  The features are more efficient and easy to use, plus, now you can add plug-ins with your eyes closed.

If you’re just starting out, WordPress is a great free blogging service.  In this video, Michael Hyatt shares how blogging has impacted not only himself, but his way of discerning philosophy.

He puts it well when he describes how leaders obtain an influence and that social media and blogging help to “leverage your influence.”

I also love that he expresses that it is not too late for pastors to get involved…

Hyatt points out that, “Today [getting started with social media] is easier than ever! The research is already there to help you convince your board or boss that it is a worthwhile venture.  It’s not too late – you just need to get started.”

“Blogging is a way for me to think through things and how we should respond to the environment. Blogging is a terrific tool, but it’s not for everyone.”

Michael says that he believes 10 years down the road, social media will still be around as a “deep, cultural sense of relationship because people inherently want to be connected.”

If you’re looking for the right time to get started with blogging, you have found it. Not tomorrow. Not next week. You have the opportunity to encourage, empower, challenge, educate and connect right now.

What do you do when you feel like you have nothing to write about ? This is what I do:

  • Read the Word
  • Read the News
  • Check out Twitter Trends
  • Think of what I have wanted to say for a long time – but never had the courage to say before
  • Think about the last sermon I heard
  • Think about the last conference I attended

What do you do when you have blogger’s block ?
